Appalachian Trail

What is it about the Appalachian Trail? What compels thousands of trekkers to start at Springer Mountain, Georgia or Mt. Katahdin, Maine with a vision to complete this 2100-mile route? What draws many more for weekend trips along the trail? Perhaps it's the attention paid to the trail by thousands of volunteer trail maintainers. Maybe it's the trail culture that's emerged - trail names, trail angels, trail magic. Whatever the reason, the "AT" reigns supreme as the premiere hiking trail and long distance odyssey in the United States.

Since the 1980's, popularity in America's oldest continuously marked footpath has grown remarkably - and continues to grow. While some in the trails community have started to worry that the "trail experience" has declined with increased media coverage, attention to "through hikers" travelling the entire route, and popularity, the fact remains - the trail is there to make what you will of it. For some, it's a benchmark for endurance, and for others, a reaffirmation of the human spirit. For all, it's a journey that only 10% of the starters typically complete.

Below are the maps and guides published by PATC relating to the Trail. They are followed by other publications of interest to AT hikers, including some particularly keyed to long-distance through-hikers. If you intend to rise to the challenge and hike the entire route, we recommend that you review all the publications we have available. More than likely, you'll find it will take more than one to adequately prepare for your journey.

All proceeds from the sale of these maps, guides and books are returned directly to our ongoing volunteer trail, shelter, and cabin maintenance programs, as well as our ongoing efforts to purchase land to protect trailheads and trail view-sheds, and maintain PATC's 240 mile segment of the Appalachian Trail.
