Map F. Great North
Mountain-North Half (George
Washington National Forest, VA and WV, US-55 southward to VA-263)
Edition 6, 2004
This
map covers the area of George Washington National Forest along
the VA/WV state line from Capon Springs and Wardensville (in
WV) southward to Bryce Ski Resort and Orkney Springs (in VA).
It highlights Sections 16, 17, 18, 19 (31.1 miles) of
the Tuscarora Trail as described in the Tuscarora Trail Guide
(south Half).
Printed on water-resistant, tear-resistance synthetic
stock in 6 colors.
Scale 1:62,400.
Contour interval 100 feet.
The grid projection is the UTM system with lines plotted
5 kilometers apart.
The UTM grid permits easy plotting or extraction of coordinates
by those persons using GPS devices.
It provides an enlargement of the Trout Pond Recreation
Area.
Notes
on this Edition: Did you think the 1995 edition was significant
revision?
It may have been, however, this 2001 edition is a "must
have" hiking resource!
The ground coverage was extended 6 miles (southwestward)
to pick up the natural termination of various trails which previously
"ran off the map."
Several miles of new trails are available in the Halfmoon
Mountain area.
It shows the new (2000) northern trailhead for Long Mountain
Trail.
Those persons interested in 3- or 4-day backpacking circuit
hikes have many opportunities to explore.
Altogether about 240 changes were made to trail, road
and hike-related features --- thanks to the dedicated effort
of PATC volunteer Wil Kohlbrenner who knows this region like
the back of his hand.
